How to Become an AP Professional Learning Consultant

Learn about the application process and requirements to become an AP professional learning consultant.

Who Can Apply?

Experienced college educators or current AP teachers can apply to become an AP professional learning consultant.

We’re looking for consultants for the following AP subjects:

  • Calculus
  • Chemistry
  • Chinese Language and Culture
  • Human Geography
  • Japanese Language and Culture
  • Precalculus
  • Psychology
  • Physics
  • U.S. History

Applicant Requirements

The applicant must: 

  • Be a current AP Course Audit-authorized teacher or a current active higher education faculty member who has taught at least 1 semester of the comparable AP course in the last 3 years. 
  • Have past experience facilitating professional learning events both online and in person. 
  • Have previously participated in at least 1 AP professional learning event, such as an AP Summer Institute, an AP workshop, or the AP Annual Conference (preferred). 
  • Have recent AP reader experience in the subject (preferred). 

The applicant should be able to:

  • Understand College Board systems and the AP Program, including the AP Course Audit process and AP Classroom.
  • Integrate current technology and relevant resources, including AP Classroom, into workshops and institutes. 
  • Discuss curriculum adjustments and instructional strategies that will help recruit and retain underrepresented students. 
  • Commit to fulfilling College Board’s mission and goals as an AP professional learning consultant.

Application Schedule and Guidelines

Applications are accepted for select AP subjects April 1–October 15 each year.

When the application is open, you must provide:

  • Your résumé or CV.
  • An original, current AP Course Audit syllabus or equivalent syllabus for your college-level course.
  • A video (no more than 5–8 minutes in length) that shows you doing one of the following activities:
    • Effectively engaging with other educators in professional development setting.
    • Motivating your students while facilitating an instructional activity.

A strong candidate’s application will demonstrate the following:

  • In-depth knowledge of the CED and curricular requirements.
  • A classroom activity description that incorporates an instructional strategy or activity like one from the CED. The activity should promote student engagement, enhance student understanding of the topic/skill, and demonstrate your mastery in teaching the topic/skill.
  • Various instructional strategies, tools, activities, or resources that teachers could immediately implement in their classrooms. 

A strong candidate’s video will show that they can:

  • Establish a culture of high engagement among teachers.
  • Communicate and facilitate learning objectives effectively to help participants master content.
  • Pace content appropriately to establish an urgent but calm culture.
  • Provide teachers with engaging resources and activities to deepen their understanding of the course content and structure.
